America's Sweatshops.org...Solutions for a Global Problem
- The
site is dedicated to "working together to confront and defeat the
greed, bigotry and myths that perpetuate sweatshops. It contains the
following sections:Home page; Site contents; News; Sweatshop resources;
Take action; Join the campaign. It looks like a great resource for
current information on the sweatshop issue. An ideal topic in any
religion, geography or economics class at the high school level. The
information could also be used in a junior or intermediate religion
class. --Sean O'Connor

- Fields
of Hope: Child Labour in Agriculture
- This
site was developed by the American Centre for International Labor
Solidarity and the Child Labor Coalition in order to help put an end
to the exploitation of child labourers around the world. It provides
educators with information and resources to create a greater awareness
of the prevalence of child labour in agriculture. The causes of child
labour are outlined and the importance of education is emphasized.
Activities for use in the classroom, links to other sites, and ideas
on how young people can be involved in the efforts to stop child labour
are provided. This site is a useful tool to inform students on the
issue of child exploitation and get them involved in advocating for
the oppressed. -- Gail Nazareth
- Fight
Hate and Promote Tolerance
- What
can you do to join the fight against racism? How can your students
actively be involved in finding ways to fight hate? This superb website
contains wonderful resources to help combat racism. It has a great
section entitled, “101 Tools for Tolerance” which offers
ideas of promoting equity and diversity ranging from your home to
your school to your workplace to your community. There is also a section
that allows students to share their personal story of racism through
a poem or personal essay. If a student’s work is chosen to be
published, s/he has a choice of getting $25.00 cash, a $50.00 amazon.com
certificate, or a $50.00 donation to a charity of his/her choice.
Sections for teachers, parents, teens, and children make this an excellent
resource for everyone to use.-- G. Aranha
- The
Hunger Site
- This
is one of my favorite sites and I recommend it to everyone, teachers
and students - anyone. The Hunger Site uses advertising to combat
world hunger. As you enter this site, you will find a world map and
the statistic that every 3.6 seconds, someone in the world dies of
hunger. One country darkens every 3.6 seconds to show this. It is
a very persuasive visual tool. Below the map there is a "button" which
you then click on to donate food to the UN World Food Program. The
next screen shows 4 to 6 advertisment. By merely clicking onto this
page, you donate 1 to 1 1/2 cups of food. You can only do this once
a day, so my family enters this page almost daily. It has only been
in operation since June 99 when 14000 kg of food was donated. Now
they average over 200,000 kgs per week. Connected to this site is
The Rainforest Site which operates by the same princple - donation
of 12 square feet of rainforest land every time you enter. Both sites
also provide educational material. -- Lori Tutt

World Conference against Racism
- The
World Conference against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia
and related intolerence is an informative website that states the
mission of the United Nations, to end with human rights violations.
Each year a world conference is held in a different country where
issues on topics of racial intolerance and human rights violations
are discussed. This is website is suitable for teachers teaching I/S
grades. It is useful at these grade levels because major issues can
be discussed in class about discrimination and racism in our society
and what we can do to stop it. The website contains a list of acts
created by the United Nations and what they are trying to achieve
through these acts. --Xio Mara
